History
Berkhamsted Boys School was founded in 1541 by Dean Incent. Since then the school has enjoyed a long and proud history, situated in the Bourbone Valley at the heart of Berkhamsted in Castle Street.
The school has always had a strong sporting tradition and this is continued through the Old Boys Association and the many clubs it supports for the past pupils of the school.
Just as WP Carpmael conceived of the Barbarians RFU late one evening in 1890 in Leuchters Restaurant, Bradford. So the Berkhamsted Barbarians were conceived late one evening in The Boat Pub Berkhamsted 2004. David Garner (OB-1997) envisaged a social rugby club where past schoolmates could meet on a regular basis to play good enjoyable rugby.
The scene set, David set about recruiting likely members from the nearby bar. Other past alumni quickly stepped forward and pledged their commitment to a new and exciting club. Training began the following Wednesday, there were few attendees at first but over the following summer weeks numbers began to grow and the clubs popularity grew further.
By mid summer 2004, there were enough attendees to warrant the founding of the first annual Old Boys Sevens Tournament, held on 7th August 2004. Over 40 people turned out on a blisteringly hot day for a round robin tournament with 5 teams, consisting of recent school leavers right through to the alumni of 1994. 10 years of Berkhamsted Rugby trashing it out on the old school pitches made for a hugely successful and enjoyable day!
With strong foundations set, the future for OBRFC looks good, we hope that further school leavers will utilise the efforts and facilities of the club to keep in touch with old school mates, keep fit and keep playing rugby!
